In the market, you will find a variety of cocoa powders for your hot chocolate, but you have to be careful in order to buy the best quality possible. That way, you make sure that you will enjoy all its benefits. Also, make sure that you buy an unsweetened cocoa powder.
There are two types of cocoa powder in the market, Dutch-processed and natural Some say that Dutch-processed is darker and richer than natural, some believe the opposite. Here, we prefer the Dutch-processed type, but you are welcome to choose the one you like better. As long as the type you choose is unsweetened and good quality, you are good to go.
For this recipe, both semi-sweet and bitter chocolate chips work quite well. If you want, you can use both for a deeper flavor. You may also use brown sugar if you like, but the milk must be whole milk and should not be substituted.
- ¼ of a cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup chocolate chips
- 2 cups of whole milk
- 2 tbsp of cocoa powder
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
In a small saucepan, bring the milk to simmer over medium heat. Remember that milk can get burned fast, so you need to keep an eye on it at all times.
Whisk in the sugar and the cocoa powder. Stir until there are no more lumps.
Now, stir in the chocolate chips and the vanilla extract and cook. You should stir every now and then, until the chocolate chips melt.
Remove from heat and pour the chocolate into 4 cups.
*Note: If you prefer you can skip the vanilla extract. For serving, you can use whipped cream.
